About Hypnotherapy
"Hypnosis is an education, communication process by which the conscious mind and the unconscious mind agree..." - Dave Elman
The purpose of Hypnotherapy is to affect change at the emotional level and give you the unconscious resources you need to make the changes you've been dreaming of. Hypnotherapy achieves congruency or agreement between the conscious mind and unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is everthing that you are not consciously aware of. It controls everything including your thoughts, your heart rate, when you feel hungry, when you feel tired, when you feel thirsty. The list goes on and on. What this means is that if you can make change at the unconscious level, the change will be profound at your conscious level.
Traditional lifestyle changes occur through conscious repetition. This is why with most goals it begins as being difficult but the longer you stick at making the change, the easier it gets to continue making the change. What is really happening is you are consciously trying to reprogram your unconscious mind. Teaching your unconscious mind what you want and how you want to get it. When you've made the change and now live your new lifestyle on "auto-pilot" you have changed your unconscious mind.
So how does Hypnosis achieve this? Well, when you enter Hypnosis, what is actually happening is you allowing your mind, and in turn your body, to relax so profoundly that your mind is more willing to accept new ideas and suggestions. The reason the Deep Relaxation is important to the process is because while we are at a fully awake and in an averagely relaxed state our minds employ what is known as the 'Critical Factor'. The Critical Factor acts as a filter from your conscious mind to your unconscious mind meaning suggestions are subject to your own judgements of worth and may not make it to your unconscious mind, or if they do, they make it with multiple interpretations and are altered. Hypnosis bypasses this process and puts the Critical Factor to "sleep". It has been proven in scientific study and is widely known that Hypnosis increases suggestability in a person. Hypnotherapy is about suggesting healthy change and how you want this change to occur.
You may picture a hypnotherapist as having a golden watch or saying something like "look into my eyes", and in the past you might have been right, but today you may be in for a surprise. Clinical Hypnotherapy is all about achieving the best relaxtion possible and allowing your conscious mind to be at rest while your unconscious mind does all the work. During hypnosis you are ALWAYS in control. If you feel uncomfortable you can reposition your body and at all times you can simply open your eyes and end the session. You will NEVER be asked to do anything which does not directly benefit you. Hypnotherapy makes your feel comfortable, relaxed and makes you feel good. If at any stage you do not feel these things you have the control to stop the session immediately.
